Learning to read takes place in stages, in reading levels. The more steps a reader climbs, the better and faster he reads and the more his reading motivationincreases. Reading is indispensable in our society, there is a core competence of reading. Most of the enormous flood of information, mainly newspapers, books and the Internet,can only be tampered with through the ability to read. What reading level is your child at?
Please do not underestimate reading
Those who cannot read become an outsider. In the supermarket, on the authority and at the conclusion of contracts – reading is everywhere.
Reading is not just about the knowledge of the letters, and how to connect them, but rather about a meaningful, fast, quiet, inner reading. The human brain must have already stored familiar words and word elements, so that it does not have to painstakingly read the meaning of individual syllables or words.
Reading weakness hinders everywhere
Children and adults with a reading disability read slowly, inaccurately and stalled. Although they know all the letters and can often connect them, their reading flow is not fluid. They use their energy to decipher the words behind the letters. They then have no power left over for the entire text context. They are stuck at a very early reading level and do not develop a desire to read.
A meaningful promotion of reading gradually builds up a secure vocabulary. It remains on a reading level until the child or the adult can safely cope with it. In addition to the familiar and if possible already automated words, new ones are slowly being added. Common words are learned first, rare for now neglected. It is always important not to deprive the reader of the courage, but on the contrary to show him how much he can already do with his knowledge.
Reading test: What reading level is your child at?
In Germany, more than 7 million adults are considered to be functionalillie. Everyone learned to read and write at school, but they stopped at a certain level. You have a great deal of trouble understanding a longer coherent text. The reasons for this are very different. How fit is your child in reading?
When a child enters first grade, they usually already know a few letters. It can write its name (that’s more of a painting) but usually doesn’t read meaninglessly yet. In the first years of school, reading is an important core competence that is intensively promoted. Some children learn to read very quickly, others still struggle with it in the third grade.
Legasthenics memorize books
Students suffering from dyslexia can have lifelong problems. Since these difficulties have nothing to do with their intelligence, they are very clever in compensating. They simply memorize the texts and pretend to read them. This clever strategy will no longer work as the texts become more extensive and complex. At the latest, the children need the help of experts.
Some children just don’t like reading
Many boys and some girls do not find a real pleasure in reading. Because they don’t train this ability, their much reading flow doesn’t get any better. They painstakingly choose every word, so that they no longer have the capacity to find joy in the whole story. Again and again they forget what was stated in the previous sentences. Motivate your child with a reading box.
Table of read levels
The following table is based on the stages of learning to read, according to Renate Valtin, a German educational scientist.
|Reading level 1||Child recognizes symbols|
|Reading level 2||Child recognizes his name|
|Reading level 3||Child recognizes individual letters and guesses words based on their initial letter|
|Reading level 4||Child can recognize most uppercase letters in print, recognizesome letters, and read simple words without recognizing their meaning|
|Reading level 5||Child can pick syllables? It often takes a lot of time, needs to read the beginning again to understand the meaning|
|Reading level 6||Child captures meaning of words and slowly begins to automate reading. This means that it quickly captures known letter connections and simple words. It can now fully engage with the content of the read text and au an expectation about the continuation of the sentence. It recognizes grammatical and content-appropriate words faster and faster and reads fluently and emphasizes|
Goal of all reading levels: Your child can play the fluently read text and understand what he or she is reading.
Evaluation: Depending on the reading level your child is at, there is still a long way to go. To improve their reading skills, a child needs individually matching reading material that is not too heavy, but also entertaining, funny or exciting.
Your child learns to read only by reading
If your child is still struggling to read, you need a lot of patience. Set up fixed reading times of 10 to 15 minutes each day for your child to practice. Read something to each other, discuss difficult words, and always praise your child’s efforts.
