5 Strategies for Error-Free Writing
The name Fresch is an abbreviation of the term Freiburg law school. A team of teachers and psychologists developed this spelling method in Freiburg. Originally, it was intended only for children with dyslexia or a reading-spelling deficiency. However, the successes were so impressive that the concept has become a recognised teaching method in many primary schools. She helps with essays, dictations and class work.
What is the Fresch method about?
Basically, these are five strategies for children and adolescents to know how German words are written. Various learning channels are activated. The children not only write, but they also speak and move. These are the five strategies of the Fresch Method
These five strategies work as follows.
Strategy number 1 – swinging the syllable
Half of all words can be written correctly by a child if they speak the words slowly and clearly in syllables. It is best for the child to take a step in the writing direction with each syllable, i.e. to the right. At the same time, it supports movement with its hand by drawing a semicircle into the air.
For example: With the word “early piece box” the child swings three times and goes three steps to the right. It is important that there is at least one vowel in each syllable. This knowledge helps a child to find the syllables.
The whole word is then written down as slowly as possible. The child should initially speak out loud. Over time, the loud voice becomes a quiet whisper and ultimately an inaudible, inner language.
Strategy number 2 – extending
A common spelling error is the wrong consonants at the end of a word. These errors can be reduced or even completely excluded if the word is extended. If a child prolongs words ending in g/k and d/t and b/p or double consonants, it is easy to find out their correct spelling. It forms the majority for the single of a word, searches for the basic form of a verb, or increases adjectives to determine how the word is spelled correctly.

Strategy number 3 – derive
Words with ä/e or eu/äu and verbs with vowel changes often experience errors. If a child searches for related words before writing, they can find the correct spelling.

Apply Strategy Number 4 Rules
There are some basic spelling rules that a child or adolescent should know. This allows it to effectively reduce its error count. These spelling rules should make a child feel good at memorizing and remembering them over and over again.

- Case of verbs and adjectives

There are a number of words to which none of the previous four strategies applies. The spelling of these words has simply evolved over time and is not due to a rule.
